The CPC (Certified Professional Coder) certification is a credential offered by the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders). It is one of the most recognized certifications in the medical coding field. A CPC certification demonstrates a coder’s proficiency in various aspects of medical coding, including knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems, as well as compliance with healthcare regulations.

Here’s a basic breakdown of the CPC certification process:

1. Eligibility Requirements:
• Education: Typically, candidates should have a basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare procedures. A background in medical office work or healthcare is helpful.
• Experience: While no prior experience is required, the AAPC recommends having at least two years of practical experience in coding before sitting for the exam. However, you can bypass the experience requirement by completing the AAPC’s Medical Coding Curriculum.
2. Study Material:
• The AAPC offers a variety of study materials, including books, online courses, practice exams, and live classes. The CPC Study Guide is one of the most commonly used resources.
• You’ll need to learn the major coding systems: ICD-10 (for diagnosis), CPT (for procedures), and HCPCS Level II (for services and supplies).
3. Exam Details:
• Format: The CPC exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, and it lasts 5 hours and 40 minutes.
• Subjects: Questions cover coding, anatomy and physiology, healthcare reimbursement, compliance, and medical terminology.
• Passing Score: To pass, you need to achieve a score of at least 70%.
4. After the Exam:
• If you pass, you’ll be awarded the CPC certification and can begin working as a professional coder.
• Certified coders are required to earn continuing education units (CEUs) every two years to maintain certification.
5. Career Opportunities:
• With the CPC certification, you can work in various settings, including hospitals, physician offices, outpatient centers, insurance companies, and billing firms.
• It’s an excellent credential for anyone looking to pursue a career in healthcare administration or medical billing and coding.
If you’re considering getting certified, it’s a great way to increase your job prospects in the healthcare industry, which is steadily growing.
